How to Prepare Pets for a House Cleaning Visit

Before house cleaning, tell the company which pets live in the home and keep them in a secure space away from open doors, equipment, and products. Share entry and behavior instructions, store food and loose items, and do not assume the cleaning team can supervise or move a pet.

Choose a secure place for your pet

Select a closed room, appropriate crate, or supervised area where the pet is comfortable. The space should have water, ventilation, and what the animal needs for the expected duration. If that room also needs cleaning, plan when you will move the pet or leave the room outside the service.

Do not rely on a light gate when the pet can jump over or push it. Check latches, windows, and doors before the team arrives. For a highly anxious animal, consider a caregiver, walk, or alternate location during service.

What the cleaning team should know

Share the pet’s name, species, number, location, and relevant behavior such as fear of vacuums, escape attempts, barking, food guarding, or reactions to unfamiliar people. The team does not need a long history, but it does need instructions that reduce risk.

Place a visible note on the secure-room door and repeat the instruction during the walkthrough. Clearly identify any door that must never be opened. Keep your phone available when you leave.

  • Where each pet will remain.
  • Doors that must stay closed.
  • Sensitivity to noise or unfamiliar people.
  • Owner contact method.
  • What to do if the pet leaves the area.

Food, toys, and pet belongings

Store open food, medication, bowls, and small toys that block surfaces or could be moved accidentally. Pick up leashes and accessories from floors. If you want cleaning around a litter box or pet bed, explain the requested scope and remove waste that is outside regular service.

Do not assume the team will administer medication, feed, walk, or clean biological accidents without coordination. Those tasks require instructions and may fall outside residential cleaning.

Products, noise, and wet floors

Keep pets away from buckets, bottles, cloths, and freshly cleaned areas. Although the company brings supplies, mention any known sensitivity and ask about a specific restriction. Avoid making medical claims about products without reliable information.

Vacuums and moving equipment can create stress. Familiar background sound, a regular bed, or the owner’s presence may help some animals, but reactions differ. Safe separation is more important than trying to acclimate a pet during the visit.

What to do when cleaning ends

Wait until floors are dry, equipment is stored, and exterior doors are closed before releasing the pet. Check that products or bags are not accessible. If the pet stayed elsewhere, return calmly.

For recurring service, keep the same plan when possible. A predictable routine supports coordination, but communicate any health, behavior, or location change before the next appointment.

FAQ

Related questions

Can I leave my dog loose if it is friendly?

Do not assume the dog will be comfortable with noise, open doors, or unfamiliar people. Arrange a secure space to protect the pet and let the team work.

Can the team move my pet between rooms?

It should not be assumed. The owner should handle the pet or arrange a caregiver. Ask in advance about any exceptional need.

Should I mention my cat even if it hides?

Yes. Identify where the cat normally stays and which doors must remain closed. Cats may move silently or try to leave during entry.
